The Butter-Cutter On Cracking Down At Our Border With Mexico

“Well,” I said to The Butter-Cutter, “we are finally cracking down at our border with Mexico.”

“Oh,” he exclaimed, “what're we doin'?”

“Last month, the new administration announced that it is adding border guards 'to intensify inspections of southbound traffic, with 100 percent inspections of rail lines, mobile X-ray units for cars, and advanced license-plate readers to identify smugglers,' ” I read from an article reporting this decision. *

The Butter-Cutter stared at me for a moment and then asked, “Why are we doin' that?”

"The article, I read, explains that, 'The strategy aims to fight the growing power and violence of Mexican cartels, which ship billions of dollars worth of drugs into the United States and bring back weapons and cash.' " I related.

“'n' we're gonna whip these Bandidos by checkin' the shit goin' SOUTH inta Mexico?” The Butter-Cutter asked.

“Yes, that is right. By interdicting the flow of money and guns moving south, the administration is coordinating its fight against the drug cartels with Mexico.”

“What's Mexico gonna do about stoppin' them guys from bringin' that money 'n' guns inta their country? Is Mexico puttin' more o' them Policias on their side o' the border?” he asked. 

“There was no mention in the articles I read of any increase in guards on the Mexican side of the border. But, it did say that the plan calls for giving them some money for their police and military.”

“Ya know? I thought the job o' border guards was ta keep bad shit OUT 'n' not keep bad shit IN.”

“No! No! No! You don't understand. The motivation for the cartels to produce and ship the drugs into the U.S. is the American demand for those drugs. The administration has admitted that we are largely responsible for the drug flow and, by extension, the drug money that is flowing back into Mexico and fomenting their violence.” I tried to explain.

“So it's our fault them f***in' Beaners are sending that drug shit poison inta the U-S of A!” he shot back. “Is it also our fault all them Wet Backs are sneakin' across the border cuz we pay more then the Gordo Patrones in their countries?” The Butter-Cutter growled back.

“That's another issue-the immigration issue. We're now talking about the drug issue and that's the one the administration is acting on with additional border guards and money,” I said on trying to keep this discussion focused.

“If we're gonna put all them new guards on the border, why can't they work TWO ways: 1) stoppin' them smugglers goin' south; and, 2) grabbin' them Wet Backs commin' north. The way yer tellin' it: these new guys can only work in one direction atta time . . .or is it, the administration don't wanna stop them illegals from comin' north?”

“The administration does not want to stop illegal immigration? That is a ridicules question! Of course they do! The above announcement just addressed the smuggler issue and I wish you would keep that focus,” I said in trying again to get back to the issue at hand.

“Oh, yeah, focus? OK, I'll give ya focus. Instead o' lettin' these Motherf***ers get their shit inta the country, we oughtta be stoppin' 'em at the border 'n' grabbin' off the drugs before it gets in 'n' poisons our Americans,” he countered with growing passion. “How's that fer focus?”

I paused for a moment to compose my answer, and then said, “We have been trying for YEARS to stop the drugs from coming into this country and we have, not only, failed to stop it, THE VOLUME HAS INCREASED. It is now coming in by the TONS and TONS. So, the administration has decided to attack the money. If they can cut off the flow of money gained from selling the drugs, they believe they can . . . for lack of a better word, bankrupt the cartels and put them out of business!” I argued. 

“NO SCREAMIN' SHIT! Even this former intelligence officer believes this BULLSHIT!” he said looking up at the overhead. “If we can't stop TONS and TONS o' dope comin' north, how in the f*** we gonna stop pounds of American paper money goin' south that's easier ta hide? Remember, alotta that dope is marijuana 'n' it takes up a bunch o' space; meanin', it's hard ta hide! This whippin' the cartels shit by stoppin' the money comin' south is just another case o' Dumbo-Ears thinkin' we're stupid enough ta believe his sweet-talk BULLSHIT O' CHANGE!” 

I stood there silently as The Butter-Cutter turned and left the Chow Line to disappear into the Galley. Rather than wait for his return, I left the virtual Mess Hall listening to his words echoing in my ears.
